Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a psychiatric condition characterized by alternating episodes of mania and clinical depression over an extended period.

A patient with bipolar disorder experiences extremely severe mood swings. Due to the nature of the illness, the patient’s mood is constantly shifting, ranging from emotionally unstable personality disorders (such as borderline personality disorder) to traditional depression.

In essence, bipolar disorder is an emotional rollercoaster: the patient feels high one moment and low the next, struggling to find balance amidst these extreme mood swings.
